Stewart Mackinnon

Stewart studied at Edinburgh Art College and worked as an illustrator in Berlin and London. His work was published regularly in the Times and Sunday Times. He went on to the Royal College of Art and then worked as a director and producer in London before moving to Newcastle to set up his production company, Trade Films. This award-winning company went on to produce over 30 award winning dramas and documentaries. During this period Stewart produced and directed two feature length films for C4 and ZDF, “Border Crossing” and “Ends and Means”. He also produced “When the Dog Bites” which was nominated for the John Grierson Award and “The Miners’ Tapes”, which was winner of the Grierson Award.
Stewart has worked for all the UK broadcasters and a number of major independent production companies, including Endemol. He was responsible for developing and producing Double Exposure, a ground-breaking drama series for writers new to television which involved BBC Drama Departments in Scotland, Ireland and England.
He has had screenplays shortlisted in three consecutive years for the Dennis Potter Award, finally winning with the script of
THIS LITTLE LIFE, which he went on to produce. It has won two BAFTA’s, four RTS Awards, the BANFF award, was nominated for three British Independent Film Awards and was pre-selected and awarded a special Prix Europa.
Stewart set up Headline Pictures with MARK SHIVAS, former Head of BBC Drama and BBC Films who produced movies directed by Dennis Potter, Frederic Raphael, Tom Stoppard, Jack Rosenthal, Alan Clark, Peter Ransley, Anthony Minghella, Stephen Frears, Mike Newell, David Hare, Michael Winterbottom, Antonia Bird, Allan Bennett, Peter Moffat and Gillies Mackinnon. Since Mark’s death in October 2008 Stewart runs Headline Pictures and is one of the Executive Producers.
